The Russia–Ukraine Story the Media Won’t Tell You

(Aug. 19, 2025):

First of all, my own position on the Russia Ukraine war is that it NEVER had to happen.   I think the entire war could have been easily avoided.  All the tens of thousands of deaths.  The massive destruction of homes and infrastructure in Ukraine could have been avoided.  The creation of millions of Ukrainian refugees could have been avoided.

So that's what I think.  Now one question is ... WHO is really to blame for the war.  Here in Canada, the official story is that Russia - and only Russia is to blame.  Okay, fair enough, maybe that's right.  And that is the official media story that we are told.

But the corporate media have lied to me my whole life.  I no longer trust them to tell me the truth.  For example, when I was a kid, the media told me the United States was in the Vietnam War because the United States wanted freedom and democracy and justice and peace for the Vietnamese people.  And I believed every word of it.  I completely trusted the media when they told me that story about Vietnam.  And the people who run the United States went right through Central and South America when I was a kid, always fighting the evil commies so the people could have freedom and democracy and prosperity.  And I believed that too.  And it all turned out to be a lie.

Sooooo,  I don't believe the corporate media anymore.  And therefore, I don't believe the media story about the Russia - Ukraine War.  But just because I don't believe it doesn't mean their story is wrong.  Maybe they are telling the truth this time.  But at least I now try to VERIFY the stories the media tell me before I believe them.

And now we come to the big problem that we have in Canada these days.  Because when I try to verify the official Russia Is The Enemy story, I quickly found that there is another story out there.  And in that story, it is the United States and not Russia that is the real villain in this war.  And in this other story, it is the people who run The United States who are to blame for the thousands of deaths and millions of refugees and all the pain and suffering of that war... Not Putin, but Biden.  Not Russia but the United States.  And a lot of experts are telling this same story.  Former U.S. military people are telling this story.  Former diplomats.  Independent Journalists.  Professors.  Researchers.  And etc.

But the corporate media in Canada, which is very big and very powerful, will not report on these people and will not interview these people.  So we Canadians are not allowed to hear these points of view in the corporate media.  And in that I include just about all of our radio stations.  CTV.  CBC. And all the other TV networks.   The Globe and Mail and all of Canada's corporate owned newspapers.  And there is much more than that; the corporations for example certainly have a huge presence on the internet.  So there is a very powerful force that is telling us one side of the story, and not allowing us to hear any other sides of the story.

And that is called Censorship:   And we have got to realize that the imposition of censorship is not necessarily a good thing for the vast majority of us. I think we've been told all our lives that censorship is bad.   But now it's happening, right in front of our eyes, and we are accepting it and allowing it.  There is another side to the Russia Ukraine war story, but we are allowing the media and the politicians to tell us only the side of the story that THEY want us to hear.  And we are believing and trusting their story.  And this is not, in my opinion, a wise thing for us to be doing.

So here are three short pieces by Professor Jeffrey Sachs on the Russia Ukraine War.  Jeffrey Sachs is an expert.  He has as much expertise as all the people the corporate media uses to tell us about how Russia is completely to blame for this war.  And Jeffrey Sachs is only one of thousands of experts whose voice are censored because the corporations that own the big media don't want you to hear him.  Now I'm not saying that Jeffrey Sachs is right.  I think he's right, but maybe he's wrong.  BUT... we should not accept the right of the people who own the media to hide the opinions of experts from us, just because the owners of the media don't like what they are saying.

So here are three about one-minute-long pieces by Jeffrey Sachs.  Watch them, and ask why voices like this are not allowed into the 'official debate' in Canada.  And if you think this is fine, that's okay.  But personally, I think it is a very bad situation when the owners of the media are allowed to control the message, especially on issues of life and death and war and who our enemies will be.

And here's something else, from a group called The Cato Institute which also has a lot of expertise in it .. And again this message is just not allowed; which is dangerous to our democracy in my opinion.  https://www.cato.org/commentary/us-nato-helped-trigger-ukraine-war-its-not-siding-putin-admit-it

If the people who own the media can control the flow of information, and they do control it, and if we Canadians believe and trust what they are telling us, then I think we are being less than wise.  If we trust the large corporations that own our media, then we leave ourselves open to being conned and manipulated.  Because in my opinion the corporations who own the media don't give a DAMN about us, and nor do they give a damn about Ukraine or the people of Ukraine.

It's pretty clear that the owners of the corporate media want us to blame and fear and hate Russia for this war.  But we have always got to make sure we are getting the truth and that we are making decisions that are the best for us. We cannot afford to be conned and manipulated on issues of war and peace; it's just too important.  And believe me, the corporate media act exactly the same way on ALL important issues.  The corporatons always put their own power and their own profit ahead of anything else.  They don't care about Canada or Canadians.  And we should always keep that in mind, because if there is one thing the corporate media is good at, it's conning and manipulating people.
