More than 2 inches of rain fell in New York in one hour on Monday night, the second-wettest hour ever recorded in the city.
Twenty of New York City's 472 subway stations were closed for parts of Monday evening with major flooding in some.

“We have an infrastructure that was designed for an environment we no longer live in.
Monday night’s storm represents ‘one of the most intense rain storms the system has dealt with’...
The pipes were designed for a certain amount of water,” he said. “A lot more water fell from the sky.”
Airport Rainfall Records:
Newark Airport (in New Jersey): 2.13 inches
LaGuardia Airport: 1.66 inches
Both setting new records for the date.
A flash flood emergency was declared overnight for Petersburg, Virginia, where 3 to 6 inches of rain fell across the area in just a couple of hours.
Meanwhile, in Plant City, Florida, east of Tampa, nearly 10 inches of rain fell in three hours, surpassing the criteria of a 1,000-year rain event.
